The following is an excerpt from John George’s interview “Measuring the ‘Ow!’ & the ‘Meow!’— Startup developing a way to quantify pain” with Deb Dullen, President of BioTraceIT.

When trying to assess a patient’s pain, doctors will typically ask a person to rate their pain on a scale of one to 10.

The problem with that is different people have different pain thresholds. And what if the patient is an animal? Veterinarians are not going to have much luck with that subjective method.

A Center City medical-device company has come up with a better way.

BioTraceIT has developed patented technology that can quantify pain in human patients and in dogs, cats, and horses.

“It can be difficult for people to report pain accurately,” said Deb Dullen, the co-founder, president, and CEO of BrioTraceIT. “Our device is like taking your temperature for pain.”
